Welcoming a newborn into your life is a joyous occasion filled with countless tender moments. Along with the joy comes the responsibility of caring for your baby's delicate skin. One natural and time-tested option for infant skincare is extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). Rich in antioxidants and healthy fats, EVOO can provide nourishment and protection for your baby's skin. Here's how to safely use EVOO on your newborn's skin:
1. Choose High-Quality EVOO
Opt for high-quality, cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil. Look for organic varieties that are free from additives and chemicals. The purity of the oil is crucial when using it on your baby's sensitive skin. We recommend our Gentle Baby Oil: pure, high quality extra virgin olive oil that we infuse with beneficial herbs like chamomile, calendula, and plantain.
*Please note: these herbal infusions are not fragrances nor additives - the herbs literally sit in the oil for days on end (infusing) before the oil is strained.
2. Conduct a Patch Test
Before applying EVOO to your baby's entire body, perform a patch test. Apply a small amount of oil to a small area of your baby's skin, such as their forearm. Wait 24 hours to ensure there are no adverse reactions, such as redness, irritation, or allergies.
3. Avoid Fragrances and Additives
Stick to pure EVOO without any added fragrances or additives. Newborns have delicate skin that can be sensitive to artificial scents and chemicals found in scented oils.
4. Moisturize Gently
EVOO can be used as a natural moisturizer for your baby's skin. After a bath, pat your baby's skin dry with a soft towel and apply a thin layer of EVOO. Gently massage it into their skin to lock in moisture and provide a protective barrier.
5. Diaper Area Care
EVOO can be used in the diaper area to provide a gentle barrier and soothe any irritation. After cleaning your baby's diaper area, pat it dry and apply a thin layer of EVOO before putting on a clean diaper. We also recommend our Gentle Baby Powder for dry folds and bottoms.
Always prioritize safety and your baby's well-being when using any product on their skin. If you have any concerns or questions, consult your pediatrician before incorporating EVOO or any other natural remedies into your baby's skincare routine.
