What is Vitamin C?
Vitamin C is commonly known as an internal immune booster, but it has also been found to strongly benefit the skin when used topically. Vitamin C is a powerhouse antioxidant, also known as L-Ascorbic Acid. It has many health benefits when it comes to our skin:
Vitamin C is known to have a protective effect on the skin cells. It specifically enhances protection against UV rays (note: this is when used with sunscreen) and external pollutants that we are all exposed to on a daily basis.
When used daily, vitamin C has noticeably reduced the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots caused by the ageing process.Vitamin C actually reduces the hyperpigmentation because it works to block melanin synthesis, therefore decreasing the production of overall pigment. It even is a key component in our bodies’ ability to produce collagen, which supports the structure and integrity of the skin.
Because of it’s protective mechanisms, vitamin C aids in slowing the ageing process. It neutralizes free radicals found on the skin’s surface that cause oxidative stress.
Vitamin C can improve overall complexion because of its ability to brighten, even out the tone, and improve the texture of the skin.
As it turns out, Vitamin C is not only good for helping us fight a common cold, but has been proven to plump, hydrate, protect, and boost our skin’s overall complexion and appearance when applied topically.

And then there’s Ferulic Acid
When it comes to skincare, Vitamin C can be, and is often, teamed up with another power player antioxidant; enter, Ferulic Acid. Ferulic acid is another antioxidant powerhouse! In fact, its main function is to fight free radical damage and boost the effects of other antioxidants. Ferulic acid, on its own is known to support the skin’s integrity, it reduces fine lines and wrinkles, reduces and protects against photodamage (damage caused by the sun), it reduces inflammation, brightens complexion and reduces age spots and other types of hyperpigmentation. Needless to say, it is quite an awesome skincare ingredient!
Research has shown that when combined with Vitamin C, the effects on our skin can be very impressive. Not only does Ferulic Acid have the ability to fight free-radicals, but it also boosts the effectiveness of Vitamin C by assisting in stabilizing and increasing its photoprotection. In other words, Ferulic Acid helps Vitamin C to minimize sun damage. Additionally, it assists in all bullet points mentioned above, talk about amazing skin!!

Safety Measures
In general, Vitamin C and ferulic acid are both very safe for many different types of skin. It is always recommended to test a small patch of skin for a few days to make sure irritation, dryness, or redness does not occur. Lower concentrations can also be experimented with in order to accommodate skin sensitivity. Vitamin C and ferulic acid should also not be combined with AHAs, BHAs or with retinol due to reactions that may occur.
